This is Glim.
A palm-sized ember-spirit that hatched from the first spark you ever struck — your first finished quest. It collects the warmth of everything you do. It is very proud of its collection.
“Realms run on warmth. Long ago every hero carried an ember-spirit — a little flame kindled the first time they began something they were afraid of. An ember banked is an ember kept: a glim can sleep for a hundred years under ash and wake the moment its hero returns. Yours woke the day you finished your first quest. It has been collecting your warmth ever since.”
Spark to Sunheart.
Glim grows from your lifetime XP — every quest you have ever finished counts forever. Stages never go backwards.
1. SparkYour first finished questA tiny wisp with a single flame tongue — born the first time you begin something you were afraid of.
2. EmberAround level 5Ear-tufts appear and the golden core steadies. Glim starts collecting your warmth in earnest.
3. FlameAround level 15The full silhouette, drifting spark particles, and a shimmer that hints at your hero class.
4. BeaconAround level 30 — fully freeA crown flicker and a richer gradient. Glim now casts warm light on everything around it.
5. SunheartLevel 31+ with ProA slow-orbiting ring of sparks and an aurora edge — the accumulated glow of everything you have ever finished.
An ember banked is an ember kept.
Most companion apps weaponize their mascot — sad faces, dying pets, “your owl misses you.” Glim is built on the opposite promise, and we enforce it in code:
- Glim cannot go out. Its lowest state is a cozy, glowing coal — also its cutest.
- Absence triggers nothing. Miss a day, a week, a year — Glim just naps.
- Coming back earns a gift, never a lecture. Returning is a waking, not a rescue.
- No guilt notifications — "Glim misses you" messages are banned by our design rules.
- Every animation respects your reduce-motion setting, and Glim can be turned off entirely.
Questions about Glim
Can Glim die or run away?
No. Ever. Glim is an ember-spirit — an ember banked is an ember kept. Its worst-case state is a small, cozy, softly glowing coal, and it wakes the moment you return. There is no losing Glim, by design.
What happens if I miss a day — or a month?
Glim naps. That is all. Absence is never punished: no sad faces, no shrinking, no guilt notifications. When you come back, Glim wakes up and greets you with a small gift. Returning is always a celebration.
How is Glim different from the Duolingo owl?
Glim never pressures you. It has no disappointment states, never says "you should", and "Glim misses you" messages are banned by our design rules. Glim's affection is unconditional — its baseline glow is for you existing, not performing.
How does Glim grow?
Glim grows through five stages — Spark, Ember, Flame, Beacon, and Sunheart — powered by your lifetime XP. Stages never regress: every quest you have ever finished stays part of Glim forever, even after a long break.
Is Glim free?
Yes. Glim is part of every DailyRealm account, free tier included, and reaches the Beacon stage without paying anything. The final Sunheart stage arrives with Pro levels — extra polish, not withheld personality.
Can I turn Glim off?
Yes, completely — or set it to a minimal mode with no speech. The app stays fully functional either way, and your public profile shows no trace of Glim when it is off.
Is Glim distracting? I have ADHD.
Glim was designed for ADHD attention regulation: idle animation is slow and subtle (no peripheral flicker), it never interrupts typing or active focus sessions, and it fully respects your reduce-motion setting with calm static poses.
Strike your first spark.
